Change the Future

The purpose of this page is to inspire viewers to be proactive not reactive. Unfortunately, instances of genocide, oppression, and persecution have not been limited to the Holocaust. Thus, it is important to recognize the general warning signs that could lead to future human atrocities. Moreover, this is a call to action; ask yourselves how can you contribute to a better community?

General Warning Signs

Below are four general warning signs that may be indicative of oppressive conditions. Be active and be vigilant!

1.     Spreading Discrimination

An early warning sign of impending genocidal conditions is the spread of discrimination. Be wary of marginalized groups that have become the victim of collective blame for a variety of issues. For example, the Jews emerged as the scapegoats for economic distress in Germany.

2.     Systematic Persecution

Be mindful of attempts to propagate and indoctrinate. Be wary of media that targets a particular group or is bias in nature. The Nazis frequently used propaganda via posters, news, educational programs and cinema as a means of dehumanizing the Jews. The use of this propaganda was intended to increase group-mindedness and further dissociate feelings of collectivity.

3.     Normalized Violence and Persecution

Take note of instances that cross the boundary of societal norms. Ask yourself if these circumstance or instance would still be considered acceptable if it were directed at a majority group. For example, consider the common experience of African American individuals interacting with law enforcement in the United states.

4.     Authoritarian Governments

Be extremely mindful of governments that impose legal boundaries intended to limit the rights and freedoms of any one group of people. For example, the Nazi party gradually implemented a series of laws that were actively discriminating and oppressing German-Jews (i.e., having to wear the star of David).
