Green Posters and Video Abstracts: Advances in Communicating Knowledge within and Beyond Conference Settings

Over the past 10 years, our research lab has spent spent over $5,000 on poster presentations. Most often these presentations, as pretty as they may be, hang on a poster board for 1 - 3 hours, and then find themselves in the trash. Even if they make it back to the lab, they only hang on the wall out of the guilt we feel about throwing them in the trash. With technology the way it is today, we figured we would try a new approach to our poster presentations, and here we are.

So, what are Green Posters and Video Abstracts?
Well, THIS is the Green Poster. If you found us by seeing our laminated poster at CSRF, the poster you saw is the Green Poster that can be re-used at multiple conferences and will always direct viewers to this page. The content of this page then changes based on the conference! If you scroll down, you can see the Green Posters that we presented in 2018 at SSSS! The content of a Green Poster is limited only by your own imagination. You can present anything to the viewer that you can put on the Internet. In fact, one version of a Green Poster is to simply direct the viewer to a Video Abstract of your research. Examples of three different video abstracts can be found below!

Level 1 Green Poster: Direct the viewer to a digital copy of a traditional poster, PowerPoint presentation or Paper.

Scroll through the slides below to view a PowerPoint presentation on Video Abstracts and Green Posters, including tips on how to make them.

Level 2 Green Poster: Direct the viewer to a video of you giving your conference presentation.

Ideally this will be a video that you created specifically for the conference with high quality audio and visual. This could be as simple as recording your screen while you go through slides, with a “picture in picture” version of yourself showing up in the corner. Or, you could go all out and get a green screen and create a high quality video. You’ll probably want to make the presentation similar to a Data Blitz style talk to keep it short and sweet.

Level 3 Green Poster: Video Abstracts

One way of doing a Green Poster is to just direct the viewer to a video abstract of your paper/study. This kills 2 birds with 1 stone, so to speak, as you have a lasting video abstract to use in promoting your research and communicating it to a broader audience, and you also have a short and engaging way to share your research with a conference attendee.

Video Abstract: Did Secretary Clinton lose to a 'basket of deplorables'? An examination of Islamophobia, homophobia, sexism and conservative ideology in the 2016 US presidential election. Published in Psychology & Sexuality, 2017, Volume 8, Issue 4.

This video abstract discusses the results of a recent publication in the Journal of Social and Personal Relationships, which explored willingness to date trans people under hypothetical circumstances among a sample of just under 1000 individuals.

Original Paper: Not All Orgasms Were Created Equal: Differences in Frequency and Satisfaction of Orgasm Experiences by Sexual Activity in Same-Sex Versus Mixed-Sex Relationships Authors: Blair, K.L., Pukall, C.F., & Cappell, J.

Winner of the 2018 Hugo G. Beigel Award.

Please click on the poster that you would like to view and you’ll then enter an interactive presentation where you can view the research, ask questions, and much more! At the end of the presentation, you’ll be able to enter your email to receive a link to the presentation that will include the ability to see the responses that other viewers entered as they worked their way through the presentation!
